What is a local security policy?

Rating:

The policy configured on and for a local computer is called a local security policy. The local security policies can be divided into the following categories:

  • Audit policies

  • User Right assignment

  • Security options
The local security policies define the rules about who can log on to a local computer and what types of functions the logged-on users can perform. The local security policies are generally configured for the computers that are in workgroups and for multiple users who are using the same computer. These policies can also be applied to computers in domains, but in that case, these policies are overridden by any of the site policies, domain policies, and organizational policies that have been applied. In case of conflict, the local security policy is ignored and the other policies are applied. A user can set local security policies from the Local Security Policy administrative tool found in Control Panel.
