What is a full backup?

A full backup is a non-incremental Recovery Manager (RMAN) backup of all data blocks (whether or not they are modified) in data files. A full backup does not refer to the fact as to how much of the database is backed up. It refers to the fact that it is not incremental. A full backup should not be considered as a whole database backup that includes all data files and the control file of the database. A data file's backup that contains all the modified and unmodified data blocks of the data file is a full backup of the data file.
