A crossover cable is used to interconnect two network devices directly. The crossover cable is a Category 5 cable with RJ-45 connectors at both ends. Both connectors are crimped with the configuration in which pin 1 and pin 3 connections and pin 2 and pin 6 connections are crossed over.

A crossover cable is also known as a null modem. A crossover cable is used to connect one hub to another or one NIC to another.
