What is a checkpoint (CKPT) process?

Rating:

A checkpoint (CKPT) process is a background process that writes checkpoint information to control files and data file headers. It keeps track of the last successful transaction by recording the system change number (SCN).

SCN: SCN refers to the number assigned sequentially to all the transactions performed on the database.

A checkpoint occurs whenever chunks of data are written from the buffer cache to the disk.

The frequency of this background process is measured on the basis of the value the recovery interval option has.

A checkpoint automatically occurs whenever a redo log file switch occurs either on being completely full or when redo log files are manually switched.
