A basic disk is a physical disk that contains primary partitions and extended partitions with logical drives. It can also contain spanned, mirrored, striped, and RAID-5 volumes created using Windows NT 4.0 or earlier. Basic disks can be accessed by MS-DOS and all Windows-based operating systems.
