What is Remote Installation Services (RIS)?

Rating:

RIS is a service (available on Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 servers) that is used to automate the installation of Windows XP Professional on network computers without visiting each client computer. A user can install an operating system on a remote boot-enabled client computer by connecting the computer to the network, starting the computer, and logging on with a valid user account. A RIS-based install uses Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) to connect to the network. PXE is a technology that provides a way of connecting to the network by booting directly from a network interface card (NIC). With a PXE-compliant network card, a user can directly boot from the network card (server) with no additional drivers. On computers that do not have PXE-compliant network adapters, a RIS disk is required to start the computer.
