What is PWCONV?

The PWCONV command is used to convert password entries in the /etc/passwd file to shadowed passwords. The command takes the following steps for the conversion:

  • The entries in the shadowed file that do not exist in the /etc/passwd file are removed.

  • The shadowed entries that do not have the character x in the password field of the /etc/passwd file are updated.

  • Any missing shadowed entry is added.

  • Passwords in the main file are replaced with the character x.
The PWUNCONV command is used to convert a shadowed password to a normal password.

Note: Only a root user can use the PWCONV and PWUNCONV commands.
