What is Oracle Net Services?

Oracle Net Services is a suite of networking components that provide enterprise-wide connectivity solutions in distributed, heterogeneous computing environments, allowing services and their client applications to reside on different computers and communicate with one another. The main function of Oracle Net Services is to establish network sessions and transfer data between a client application and a server. Oracle Net Services is located on each computer in the network. Once a network session is established, Oracle Net Services acts as a data courier for the client and the server.

Oracle Net Services is comprised of the following components:

  • Oracle Net

  • Listener

  • Oracle Connection Manager

  • Oracle Net Configuration Assistant

  • Oracle Net Manager


  • The components of Oracle Net Services provide features such as datatype conversion, configuration and administration mechanisms, and support for multiple network transmission protocols.
