What is GPUPDATE?

The GPUPDATE command is used to refresh the local and Active Directory-based group policy settings. It also refreshes security settings. The GPUPDATE command has replaced the SECEDIT /refreshpolicy command.

Syntax:

GPUPDATE [/target:{computer|user}] [/force] [/wait:value] [/logoff] [/boot]

The description of the parameters used with the GPUPDATE command is given in the table below:

ParameterDescription
/target:{computer|user}This parameter specifies the computer or user for which the settings are to be processed. By default, the settings are processed for the user and computer.
/forceThis parameter reapplies all settings ignoring all processing optimizations.
/wait:valueThis parameter specifies the number of seconds that the policy processing waits before applying the policy. 0 represents "no wait" and -1 represents "wait indefinitely". The default value is 600 seconds.
/logoffThis parameter forces a user to log off after the refresh has completed.
/bootThis parameter forces a computer to boot after the refresh has completed.
/?This parameter displays help at the command prompt.
