What is Compressed Folders?

Compressed Folders is a new feature of Windows XP Professional. The Compressed Folders feature enables users to create compressed folders and view the contents contained in it. The compressed folder is represented by a zipper icon, which is shown below:



The compressed folder allows a user to compress large files by placing them to a compressed folder so that more files can be stored on a storage device. Dragging and dropping files to a compressed folder automatically compresses the files. However, if a file is copied from a compressed folder to another folder that is not compressed, that file will no longer be compressed. A compressed folder can be created by clicking the Compressed Folder option from the File > New menu of Windows Explorer.
