CompTIA tests are very straight forward as compared to Microsoft tests. The A+ certification of CompTIA is meant for entry-level computer technicians. It is a vendor-neutral certification. Obtaining this certification demonstrates that you have acquired the knowledge and skills required to install, configure, fix, upgrade, and troubleshoot personal computers. CompTIA's test 220-302 is not difficult if you have practiced troubleshooting personal computers. Test 220-302 tests your skills regarding working with various components of Windows operating systems.
The test is easy, to the point, and requires vast (not deep) knowledge and understanding of the operating systems.
Here is our suggestion for a candidate preparing for the CompTIA A+ Operating System (2003) test (220-302):
- Always remember that installation has two paths. One is clean installation and the other is upgrade. Practice both ways and on different command-line switches that are available.
- Setup a network of two computers. Install major protocols and practice on major connectivity tools.
- Know various command-line tools and their GUI-based counterparts.
- Practice working with registry editing tools, REGEDIT and REGEDT32. Try to find out the difference between the two. Caution! - Incorrect use of the registry editor can cause serious problems in a computer. Therefore, it is recommended to modify configuration settings using either the Control Panel or Administrative Tools.
- Practice well on partitioning and formatting hard disk drives. Use various tools available. Work on FDISK and know its options. Try to format partitions on all major file systems.
- Scenario-based questions are not asked in the CompTIA's 220-302 test. However, practicing on various scenarios will help in tackling the questions.
- Your knowledge on TCP/IP protocol suite is tested thoroughly in the test. Practice its configuration. Use the various TCP/IP tools available. Emphasize on testing connectivity.
- Troubleshooting is also a major part that is covered in the CompTIA 220-302 test. Work on major troubleshooting tools available with the operating systems.
