CompTIA has specified more than fifteen objectives for CompTIA's test A+ Depot Technician, which are grouped under five topics. Following are some important areas in which a candidate should possess good knowledge before taking the A+ Depot Technician test:
- Identifying the names, purposes, and characteristics of system components. System components include motherboard, BIOS, power supply, processor/CPU, memory, storage devices, display devices, adapter cards, ports, cases, and riser cards.
- Adding, removing, and configuring systems.
- Identifying tools, diagnostic procedures, and troubleshooting techniques for personal computer components.
- Identifying and isolating problems using visual and audible inspection of components and minimum configuration.
- Identifying the steps used to troubleshoot components such as checking proper seating, installation, settings, and current driver.
- Recognizing names, purposes, characteristics, and appropriate application of tools, for example: Multimeter, Anti-static pad and wrist strap, Specialty hardware/tools, Loop back plugs, Cleaning products.
- Performing preventive maintenance of personal computer components.
- Identifying appropriate applications for laptop-specific communication connections, for example: Bluetooth, Infrared devices, Cellular WAN, and Ethernet.
- Identifying appropriate laptop-specific power and electrical input devices, for example: Output performance requirements for amperage and voltage. Identifying the major components of the LCD (e.g., inverter, screen, video card).
- Installing, configuring, optimizing, and upgrading laptops and portable devices.
- Identifying tools, diagnostic procedures, and troubleshooting techniques for laptops and portable devices.
- Using procedures and techniques to diagnose power conditions, video issues, keyboard and pointer issues, and wireless card issues, for example: Verifying AC power (e.g., LED's, swap AC adapter), Verifying DC power, Removing unneeded peripherals, Plugging in external monitor, Toggling Fn keys, Checking LCD cutoff switch, Verifying backlight functionality and pixilation, Stylus issues (e.g., digitizer problems), Unique laptop keypad issues, Antenna wires.
- Identifying fundamental principles of using printers and scanners and describing the processes used by printers and scanners including laser, inkjet, thermal, solid ink, and impact printers.
- Installing, configuring, optimizing, and upgrading printers and scanners.
- Identifying tools, diagnostic methods, and troubleshooting procedures for printers and scanners.
- Identifying appropriate tools used for troubleshooting and repairing printer/scanner such as multimeter, screwdrivers, cleaning solutions, extension magnet, and test patterns.
- Performing preventive maintenance of printers and scanners.
- Identifying the names, purposes, and characteristics of physical security devices and processes.
- Identifying potential hazards and proper safety procedures including power supply, display devices, and environment (e.g., trip, liquid, situational, atmospheric hazards, high-voltage, and moving equipment).
