SmartArt Graphics are visual pictures to create designer-quality illustrations. SmartArt Graphics are used to communicate information visually. They emphasize information by using graphical lists and process diagrams. They are used to represent complex diagrams such as Venn diagram and organizational charts.

SmartArt Graphics make it easier for any user to create a concept and convert it into graphics. They comprise a gallery of templates and predefined shapes. All SmartArt Graphics provide automatic sizing and alignment. They are used for creating designer quality illustrations.

SmartArt Graphics are collection of predefined templates. They add color, shape, and texture to the diagrams to make the information more realistic.

The Create a SmartArt Graphic dialog box appears whenever a user clicks the SmartArt option on the Insert tab, as shown below:





The following are the features of SmartArt Graphics:

  1. Layout
  2. Text pane
  3. Smart Art styles and color variation
  4. Demotion and promotion of text
  5. Shape insertion
  1. Layout: A user can easily switch among the layouts of a SmartArt Graphic. The text and other formatting are automatically changed over to a new layout. A user can move to different layouts seamlessly to view different formats. A user can select a specific layout according to the amount and type of information. A user can also use various types of SmartArt Graphics for explaining information such as process, decision tree, sequential, non-sequential information, etc.

  3. SmartArt Styles and color variation: A user can quickly change the appearance of a SmartArt Graphic. Under the SmartArt Tools, on the Design tab, two galleries are used for changing the appearance. These galleries are as follows:

    1. SmartArt Styles: SmartArt Styles comprises shape fills and 3D formats.


    2. Change Colors: It provides a range of different colors for a SmartArt Graphic. To emphasize a SmartArt Graphic, a user can change its color.







  4. Promotion and demotion of text: A user can demote the indent of a text by using the Demote button under the Create Graphic group, on the Design tab.

    A user can promote the indent of a text by using the Promote button under the Create Graphic group, on the Design tab.



    Note: A user can also add bullets on a SmartArt Graphic.

Add animation to a SmartArt Graphic: A user can animate a SmartArt Graphic by using Microsoft PowerPoint 2007. Animation is used in SmartArt Graphics to make information more realistic. Animation totally depends on the structure of the SmartArt Graphic.

The easiest way to animate a SmartArt Graphic is to use the Animate List. A user can also use custom animation to customize the animation.
