Take the following steps to enable performance logging on a Windows XP computer:

  1. Run Control Panel from the Start menu > Control Panel.




  2. In the Control Panel window, select Performance and Maintenance. (If Control Panel is configured to show the Category view)




  3. In the Performance and Maintenance window, select Administrative Tools.




  4. In the Administrative Tools window, select Performance.




  5. In the Performance window, expand Performance Logs and Alerts.




  6. In the Performance window, right-click Counter Logs and select New Log Settings.




  7. In the New Log Settings dialog box, enter the name for the log and click the OK button.




  8. On the General tab page of the dialog box for the log name, click the Add button to add a counter that you want to log.




  9. In the Add Counters dialog box, select the computer to be monitored, the appropriate performance object, and a counter from the list. After performing these actions, click the Add button and then click the Close button.




  10. On the Log Files tab page of the dialog box for the log name, modify the name and location of the log file as well as the type of file. (if desired)




  11. On the Schedule tab page of the dialog box for the log name, configure the start and stop times for logging, and then click the OK button.
