The following are the steps to create and merge master and content pages by using Visual Studio 2005:

  1. Create a new Web site named MasterContentWebSite by using Visual Studio 2005. For creating a new master page, select Website>Add New Item... menu option. An illustrative image is shown below:



  2. The Add New Item dialog box appears. Select the Master Page option from the Visual Studio installed templates under the Templates option. Type a valid name for the master page in the text box of the Name option. Then, click the Add button. An illustrative image is shown below:



  3. The master page named MyMasterPage.master will be added to the Web site. Click on the Design tab of the master page, as shown below:



  4. From the Toolbox tool option, drag the appropriate Web server control and place them to the design view of the master page. An illustrative image is shown below:



  5. Drag the Label Web server control and place it on the master page. Open the Properties Window of the Label control and set its required properties, as shown below:



  6. Then add a new Web form by selecting Website>Add New Item... menu option. The Add New Item dialog box appears. Select the Web Form option from the Visual Studio installed templates under the Templates option. Give an appropriate name for the Web form in the text box of the Name option. Check the Select master page check box option and click the Add button. An illustrative image is shown below:



  7. The Select a Master Page dialog box appears. Select MyMasterPage.master under the Contents of folder option. Click the OK button. An illustrative image is shown below:



  8. Click the MyWebForm1.aspx tab and click the Design tab of the Web form. Finally build the Web form. Both the contents of the master page and the form is seen to be merged, as shown below:
