How to create a layer mask?

Take the following steps to create a layer mask:
- In the Layers palette, select the layer to which you want to add a mask.


- By using any selection tool, select the area which you want to reveal.

- Click the Add Layer Mask button
at the bottom of the Layers palette.
Or, alternatively, choose Layer > Add Layer Mask > Reveal Selection/Hide Selection.

After adding the layer mask, the image will look like the one given below:
