How is the filename format of a control file autobackup configured?

Rating:

By default, Recovery Manager (RMAN) uses a default filename format to store a control file autobackup, so that RMAN can search for the autobackup even if the RMAN repository (the recovery catalog or the control file's header) is inaccessible. However, the default filename format can be changed by executing the CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT command at the RMAN prompt. The format that is configured using the CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT command remains in effect for any RMAN session until the configuration is changed or cleared.

The SET CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT command can be used to override the configured filename format. However, it is effective only for the current session. The SET CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT command can be specified either within a RUN block or at the RMAN prompt.

Following is the order of precedence of the commands that can be used to change the filename format of a control file autobackup:

  1. SET CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT command specified within a RUN block

  2. SET CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT command issued at the RMAN prompt

  3. CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT command
